Subject: Quadrature spindle encoder
Hi,
I am interested in making a spindle encoder with use of 2 Hall effect sensors that will wire directly into an encoder Channel's a & b on the kflop (probably io40 & 41)
Are there any good posts on this topic?
(I am Having a challenge weeding through posts, but read a few)

Criteria: (true or false? & addittional thoughts)
1) Sensors should be mounted 90deg apart
2) duration of the on-state of the sensor to be detected by kflop is ... What is the minimum duration? I am not sure on this one.
3) in regards to the kflop and someone making an encoder, I read a post that it was recommended to use a .c program called mpgsmooth.c and... To make a question out of this, what would be required in terms of making the kflop read this simple 2 sensor encoder and what are the limitations?
4)...

Your thoughts or old posts on how to do this are appreciated,

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

It isn't clear what you mean. The two sensors should each generate a 50% duty cycle square wave and the two signals should have a 90 degree phase shift.  It isn't clear to me how you would do this with Hall sensors.  Here is a related thread:

KFLOP hardware encoder inputs should have transitions at least 1us apart.

If you have encoder type signals connected to a hardware encoder input no special C Program would be required.

Thanks Tom,

The Hall effects I ordered are cherry electronics barrel sensor (mp1001 series). It should work as at least an index pulse, so I am happy there and that will be good enough let's hope.

As for them acting as an encoder, It has a square wave, but I will be lacking the duty cycle requirements.

Thanks for all your insights
